Easter project -> change OS

March 17th, 2008 Gjerven

For this easter I was going to install Xubuntu on an old desktop I never use. This was the first time I was going to really use any kind of linux.

Anyway, that project ended right after I burned out the Xubuntu CD.

My project was changed: Change OS on my main computer.

The reason for this was that I was sick and tired of BSOD, other errors, AV and firewall draining my system, etc.

Since this was my main computer I wanted to use Ubuntu instead of Xubuntu. Reason for this was that Ubuntu is more popular and therefor has a bigger usergroup, which means better help if I needed it.

The first thing I did was downloading and burning out Ubuntu. Then I started cleaning up my hdd by removing programs, files, defragmenting etc… When I had done that I restarted, and started with the Ubuntu CD.

Now, I had read alot of information on installing Ubuntu (or so I thought). All information said that it should be fine to install in graphics mode with only 256 MB RAM, it turned out that 384 MB RAM was needed.

So my installation in graphics mode never started. So then I went with the Ubuntu alternative CD. All went fine until I got to the partitioning part. It simply wouldn’t let me partitioning my disk.

I was lost.. Nothing worked.. So then I started up the Xubuntu CD, and because of its low requirements a graphical installation went fine. Well, fine until the partitioning.. It told me that the hdd was to small, or that the free space was to small. At this time my hdd had around 50 GB free space, and it should work. I was getting very frustrated.

So after reading a bit on the Internet, I booted up the Xubuntu CD again and would try to partitioning the hdd with GParted. But simply wouldn’t let me. Now I was very frustrated, but after some digging, I found out that my bad blocks on my hdd was the reason I wasn’t allowed to partitioning my hdd. It said to run ”chkdsk /f /r”, but it didn’t fix it..

So today I ordered a 160 GB hdd and 512 MB RAM stick. Both things was cheap so no problem there. My next upgrades are going to be a brand new laptop, preferably a ThinkPad, any kind of ThinkPad, just as long it’s a ThinkPad :) I could also go for a MacBook (Pro), but I like ThinkPad a bit better.

Anyway, because of these problems I have gotten to read a bit more on Ubuntu and Xubuntu. And even though I ordered new RAM that makes it possible to use Ubuntu, I’m going to use Xubuntu. XFCE is more interesting than Gnome (and KDE).
